Birdwatching opportunities
The Skjern Enge area is ideal for birdwatching all year round. The countryside around the
Skjern Å river is a giant attraction, with plenty of activities for all the family. There is an excellent view over the landscape from Lønborg Church. and alongside Lønborgvejen between Skjern and Lønborg there are great opportunities to see many aquatic birds on Hestholmsøen lake (east of the road) and on Vesterenge (west of the road) from the car park and the birdwatching hide. From the hide near Lønborggård, there is also a fine view over the wetlands to the north. Similarly, you can observe the birdlife on Vesterenge meadows from the old river dike, that forms the border between the nature reserve and the cultivated fields. Cycle paths have also been laid out here. In parts of the area, you may be requested to keep to the paths out of consideration for the birds. There are signs that state where this applies.

Open tours of Skjern Enge
Group tours with nature guides are arranged in the area. Open tours are announced and conducted by the Danish Forest and Nature Agency in Oxbøl, in collaboration with the Skjern-Egvad Museum and the local department of DOF - Birdlife Danmark in the County of Ringkjøbing. You can see exhibitions about the birdlife of Skjern Enge at Skjern Enge Nature Centre, Gl. Botoftevej 4, Vostrup, 6880 Tarm and at the Pump Station.

International nature reserve
Skjern Å river and the meadows have been designated a European nature reserve – what is
known as a Natura 2000 area. The purpose of such areas is to preserve and protect biological diversity both nationally and in a European context. In 2003, the Skjern Enge project was presented with the Europa Nostra award – a prize for the preservation of European cultural heritage. The nature project was subsidised in part by Life Nature and Life Environment.
